Platinum Jubilee weekend saw the summer 2022 edition of the Alton Beer Festival held at Alton College.

This was the 35th time drinkers had gathered in the festival’s 20-year existence and the theme was celebration.

Friends and families enjoyed a range of beers and ciders while listening to live music.

There were ten beers new to the festival and some were brewed specially for the Jubilee.

Many of the breweries involved were near Alton, honouring the town’s brewing heritage, and there was also local cider maker Mr Whitehead.

The festival also welcomed back old favourites, and sponsor Triple fff had a range of its beers available.

There was a range of entertainment over the two sessions. On June 3 local band Belter kicked off the weekend in style with an uptempo mix of crowd pleasers, while June 4 saw the return of Call Me Ishmael plus Holybourne band Blue Eyed Soul.

There was something for everyone on the food front. The 8th Alton Scout Group ran a barbecue to raise money for itself, and those wanting something spicier headed to Saf’s Kitchen for authentic Indian and Pakistani dishes.

Kate’s Lite Bites was also a success, offering pork scratchings, nuts and crisps for people wanting something to nibble while drinking.

Every penny of profit from the Alton Beer Festival goes to local charities, and since 2002 it has raised more than £245,000.

Now more than ever there is a need to support the local community’s needs, and thanks to the fundraising efforts of everyone who participated, this can continue – all through drinking local beer.

Anyone who knows of a local charity or good cause which is looking for funds is encouraged to visit the charities page on the festival website and complete an application form. Applications for donations from the summer festival can be made until June 30 – visit www.altonbeerfestival.org.uk for more information.

The festival would not be able to run without all the volunteers who give their time and energy to help set up, serve and clear down.

In addition there are countless people, organisations and pubs who help in the run-up to the festival by selling tickets and displaying banners and posters.

Volunteers wore anniversary polo shirts sponsored by Bourne Estate Agents. The organisers want to thank the breweries and cider makers who back the festival, in particular founding brewery sponsor Triple fff. It is run by local people to benefit local people.
