ALTON residents and businesses will discuss how best to mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death at the next Community Forum held in the town.

The author who lived and wrote in Chawton has fans around the world and a programme of events to mark the anniversary is expected to attract many visitors to the area.

The forum will feature talks from Pat Lerew, the chairman of Alton Chamber of Commerce, Julie McLatch, Alton’s Business Development Manager and a representative from Jane Austen’s House Museum.

Chairman of the Alton Community Forum Cllr Glynis Watts said: “This is an excellent opportunity for local businesses and community groups to engage in the programming for the year and to increase their visibility to a whole new audience.

“When Jane Austen died in July 1817 she left behind a wonderful legacy of literature and her works are loved across the world.

“The events planned to commemorate her life and works will pull in visitors to the Alton area throughout the year and we must make sure this historic moment is marked appropriately.”

Community Forums are run by East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) to discuss local issues. January’s forum will also see a presentation from EHDC Director Tom Horwood on proposed boundary changes in the district.

The review, conducted by the Boundary Commission, will look at the district council’s internal ward boundaries and will include a public consultation.

The forum will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 6.30pm at Alton Community Centre, Amery Street, Alton GU34 1HN.
