DIGGERS on Petersfield Heath look set to have struck archaeological gold again.
As this latest excavation in the People of the Heath project comes to a close, fragments of a small Bronze Age urn have been unearthed in a ring bank barrow. Archaeologist George Anelay (pictured scraping the pot area) said this was evidence of a possible burial. This was significant as the five other Heath barrows of that type dug before had turned up no burial remains, but only the centres had been worked on. The net had been cast wider this time, with more unveiled. George and his team are to find out for sure over the next few days, after getting the go ahead from Historic England and before the dig ends at the weekend. George said: “Finding the urn lifted morale.” It would help to work out the function of that type of barrow.
