SHEET Scout group has launched a drive to recruit more Cub leaders as three leaders with more than 50 years of experience between them prepare to step down.
Jeff Graham (65) and Dave Papworth (62) have run the Wednesday Cub pack at Sheet since 1999. A couple of years later they were joined by Lesley Preston, who is also about to retire from Petersfield Infants School.
The popular trio agreed some time ago they would retire together, and have announced they are stepping down in July.
Jeff, who lives in Steep, said: “It’s been fantastic, but we feel it is time for a younger team with more energy and fresh ideas to take over.
“I have really enjoyed it, it’s been great giving something back and becoming involved in the community. Meeting young adults in town that were Cubs and hearing what they are doing now makes it worthwhile – and I’ve learned some interesting knots.”
Dave, who now lives in East Meon, added: “It’s about making something good happen for the children.
“Some activities have been really exciting, while others have just been fun.
“There is a great team spirit among the leaders, and you feel as though you are part of a big successful organisation providing something really worthwhile. But now it’s the right time to pass it on to people with new ideas and fresh enthusiasm.”
Lesley’s son, Marc, will continue to run the Wednesday Cubs at Sheet, assisted by leaders from Sheet Scouts, and the Thursday Cub pack, until new leaders are in place.
One of the activities Sheet cubs enjoyed was the George Pickup tracking competition in Queen Elizabeth Country Park, which saw them pit their skills against Petersfield, Liss and Liphook Cubs.
District Cub leader Melanie Robinson said: “The challenges included a blindfold trail, compass navigation and searching for clues in an outdoor twist on the well-known board game Cluedo.
“They also tried geo-caching, searching for ‘treasure’ using handheld GPS devices.
“Well done to 1st Liphook Cubs, who narrowly beat 1st Sheet Cubs to win.”
Anyone interested in becoming a leader, or part time volunteer, can find out more from an information stand being manned at the bank holiday festival in Petersfield from 10am to 4pm on Sunday and Monday, or from the group’s website www.sheetscouts.org.uk
