THE PEOPLE behind an appeal to help families facing Christmas in makeshift refugee camps in Northern France say there is still room in the van for more Wellington boots, sleeping bags and warm clothing.

Organisers hope the first delivery can be made before Christmas, as donated goods start piling up.

Steve Field, of the Salvation Army and Petersfield Town Council office manager, is taking items on behalf of the appeal.

He said: “As soon as there is enough to fill a van, it will be taken to?France.”

Despite attempts to stem the flow of humanity across the Mediterranean from Turkey into Europe, refugees, mainly Syrian, are still walking into the camps.

Aid agencies admit they are overcrowded after the huge migration of people fleeing war and repressive regimes in the Middle East and Africa, earlier this year.

As winter sets in, thousands are living in tents in fields and on undeveloped building land, using portable loos, showers and water stand pipes.

To help the Petersfield appeal for refugees’ aid this winter, sleeping bags, sturdy, waterproof footwear, waterproof tents and winter clothing can be left at the Petersfield Post, 33 High Street, Petersfield, or the council office in the Festival Hall off Heath Road. Cash can also be donated, and will be used to help cover any costs for the trip.
