THE founder of a charity providing trained assistance dogs for disabled veterans and emergency services personnel has been chosen for a Points of Light award by prime minister Boris Johnson.
Allen Parton, of Clanfield, set up Hounds for Heroes in memory of his own assistance dog Endal, who helped him recover physically and emotionally after being injured in the first Gulf War.
Points of Light is a national awards scheme recognising outstanding volunteers who are making a change in their community and inspiring others. Every day someone in the UK is selected to receive one and Mr Parton is the 1,262nd winner.
Mr Parton, accompanied by his two assistance dogs, EJ – Endal Junior – and Rookie, was presented with his by Meon Valley MP Sir George Hollingbery at the Houses of Parliament on October 15.
He said: “I am so incredibly humbled and honoured to have been nominated for a Points of Light award. I am, though, constantly reminded to look over my shoulder at those who have supported me over the years and made my dreams and visions the reality they are today.
“The message that comes out of awards such as this is that folk really do care, and from where I sit that is such a powerful message to receive.
“I salute you all.”
