A PETERSFIELD charity for young parents struggling to cope is aiming to raise £6,000 to help new mothers suffering with depression before, during or after they give birth.

If Home-Start Butser can raise £6,000 between noon on Tuesday, November 28, and noon on Tuesday, December 5, it will get another £6,000 from the Big Give Christmas Challenge, towards launching Bumpstart.

The initiative is aimed at helping mothers suffering post-natal depression and other forms of mental health problems while pregnant or soon after giving birth.

Bumpstart volunteers will also support pregnant mothers and their families who are at risk of poor attachment to their baby.

Home-Start Butser spokeswoman Nicola Winter said: “This money will go directly to help women who suffer from illness and isolation in pregnancy and the early part of their baby’s life.

“Some of the money will go on training for volunteers, who will then provide support to vulnerable parents, giving them a chance of a happy healthy pregnancy – up to six months after the baby is born.”
