British badminton legend Gail Emms will give a motivational speech to the district’s sports stars at this year’s East Hampshire Sports Awards.

The annual awards, held at the Old Thorns Hotel in Liphook, are run by East Hampshire District Council and will be hosted by three-time Olympic medallist Roger Black.

You can nominate someone for an award until February 28, and it is now easier than ever by using the online form which can be found at www.easthants.gov.uk/sports-awards

Gail retired from badminton after the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but she has been world champion, number one in the world rankings at mixed doubles, European, Commonwealth and All England champion, and an Olympic silver medallist in Athens. Her Olympic medal and world title came in the mixed doubles with Nathan Robertson.

Since retirement, Gail has concentrated on motivational speaking, badminton coaching and television commentary.

She has been very open about her struggles with mental health after retiring from the sport and has continued to challenge herself with charity climbs up Mount Kilimanjaro, running the London Marathon and even completing a stand-up comedy course.

Gail said: “I am so excited to be part of the East Hampshire Sports Awards this year.

“Sport is such an important part of our lives and our achievements, at any level, should be celebrated.”

Cllr Julie Butler, East Hampshire District Council’s deputy leader, said: “The East Hampshire Sports Awards is always a fantastic event that celebrates our sports men and women.

“We are delighted to welcome Gail to the event and look forward to hearing what advice she has for our local heroes.”
