A BEACON lighting event will be held in Liss to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The event is being organised by Liss Parish Council and Liss Junior School, and will be held on the junior school’s field on Thursday, April 21.

Gates will open at 6.30pm, with the beacon lighting taking place at 7.30pm. It is part of a series of nationwide beacon lightings on the day.

Liss Band will provide entertainment and refreshments will be provided by the school’s parent teacher association (PTA).

Liss Parish Council chairman Keith Budden said: “It should be a very good event.

“We have ordered the beacon and I’m pleased the school are getting behind it.

“The school is sending a letter to all of the parents, and it should be a nice event for all ages as there will be something for everyone.

“Hopefully, 7.30pm will be a good time as it won’t be full daylight and it won’t be too late for the children.

“It will be free for people to turn up and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Liss may also have the added benefit of being the only place in East Hampshire hosting a beacon lighting.

“We’ve checked with the royal pageant master and as far as we know Liss is the only parish in East Hampshire doing a beacon lighting event,” said Cllr Budden.

Although nothing is confirmed yet, a competition might be arranged, with the winner pressing the button to light the beacon.

Cllr Budden said: “We’ve not yet pursued the competition, but it would be nice for the winning child to press the button.”

Hopes are high that the village will get behind the beacon lighting event and attend in force on the night.

“Hopefully, we will have a nice clear evening for the lighting,” said Cllr Budden.

“I’ve had a look at the junior school’s field, and it seems pretty big. We might have a problem with parking, so I would ask people to park at Newman Collard or in the car park on Hill Brow Road.”
