AROUND a thousand people are expected to gather around Horndean War Memorial this Sunday as the village’s annual Remembrance Service begins at 10.40am.

A parade, which will leave the Scout Hut on Queen’s Crescent at 10.25am, will be controlled by a traffic management company during its journey to the Square.

Havant Road and Blendworth Lane will be closed to traffic between 9.30am and noon while parking restrictions will also be in place on Five Heads Road during the event.

Members of the armed forces are welcome to march with the parade, if they so wish, while music at the service will be provided by the Blendworth Brass Band.

Representatives from Clanfield Junior School, Petersgate Infant School and Horndean Technology College will all lay wreaths at Clanfield’s war memorial on Sunday morning.

The village’s Remembrance Service will begin around 10.30am once the parade from the Scout Hut on Little Hyden Lane reaches the Memorial Hall.

Representatives from the police, police cadets, parish, district and county councils will also lay a wreath during the event, which will include a minute’s silence and sounding of the Last Post.

A Holy Communion service in All Saints Catherington will follow a 9.20am service at the Lychgate, while a Service of Morning Prayer and Remembrance will begin at St Michael’s, Chalton, at 9.30am.

A flag lowering ceremony will take place at 11am on The Green in Rowlands Castle this Saturday to mark Armistice Day.

The Union Flag will be lowered for the two-minute silence while a service will also take place at the village’s war memorial the following day just before 11am.

Hundreds of people are expected to gather around the village green on Sunday morning for the Denmead Act of Remembrance.

A parade will leave the Heath Field car park at 10.20am with the 10.55am Service of Remembrance being followed by refreshments in All Saints Church Hall.

A community coffee morning with a focus on Remembrance will also take place this Friday from 10.30am to 11.30apm in Green Meadows Residential House in the village.
