UPPING tools and getting stuck into The Big Dig on Saturday, April 16, were enthusiastic supporters of Petersfield Community Garden.

Around 15 adults and children gathered at the garden at Waterworks Road in Sheet to take part in the national event designed to promote community gardens across the country.

The weather was rather changeable but tasks were ticked off the list, and there was time for the all-important chatting around a bonfire while munching on home-made oat and blackberry flapjacks.

The team planted potatoes, sowed onion sets and planted out peas to make a start on the growing season.

Other jobs that will need doing in the garden, which was started in 2013 for the use by and benefit of people in Petersfield and the surrounding villages, include making new beds, potting on tomatoes and artichokes and sowing spinach and carrots.

If you would like to join the growers, they are at the garden on Wednesdays from 9.30-11.30am and Sundays 2-4pm. Visit www.petersfieldcommunitygarden.org for more information.
