BOHUNT pupils voted to stay in the EU at a mock referendum held a week earlier than the national in or out the EU ballot being held tomorrow.

At Bohunt, 694 pupils voted out of the 1,395 pupils eligible to do so, while 57 of the 170 teachers voted.

After the count, it was revealed that the campaign at the school to remain in the EU gained 453 votes from pupils, while the leave campaign got 241 student votes.

Among staff, 48 opted to stay in the EU, while just nine wanted to leave.

The students voted in their lunch break in polling stations throughout the school. The referendum followed an intense spell of class debates and information sessions, speaking to MEP Catherine Bearder via skype, and a lunchtime debate for the whole school.

Associate headteacher Philip Avery said: “It will be interesting to see whether the Bohunt result is a predictor of the final result in tomorrow’s national referendum.”
