LEADING UK ecology consultancy Thomson Ecology has been working with Whitehill Town Council over the last year providing ecological advice to help in the management and monitoring of the Bordon Inclosure.

The Bordon Inclosure site, which has been taken over by the council since 2016, has been designated as a Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG). It provides green space for residents living in the new housing at Quebec Park and Louisburg, and space for them to walk and exercise their dogs.

The area, which is north of the Deadwater Valley, provides an alternative location for residents so that they are less likely to visit the Broxhead and Kingsley Commons Special Protection Area (SPA) which is designated as a site of international conservation importance, because of its population of heathland birds, including Dartford warbler, woodlark and nightjar.

Thomson Ecology has been working with the council to help it manage and monitor the Bordon Inclosure area and to additionally monitor the SPA at Broxhead and Kingsley Commons.

Chairman of the New Greenspace Sub-Committee at Whitehill Town Council Cllr Chris Mitchell said: “This SANG is essential to support rapid growth of Whitehill and Bordon, specifically the 600 new homes at the former Louisburg barracks site and Quebec Park.

“Since the site was opened in 2016, it has been very popular with both existing and new residents. It is important for the council to maintain and manage greenspaces of this quality.”
