A COUPLE who run a street food firm from Buriton Business Park could soon be catering for diners around the UK after serving up a treat on primetime television.
Rupert Smith and Marita Lietz showed off their fare to a national audience in early June when their ‘Bubble&’ business appeared on BBC1 show Million Pound Menu.
The firm – which offers delicious bubble and squeak combinations – was one of 12 which showcased their dishes and business plans to a panel of investors willing to offer anything up to £1m.
The show focused on two firms every week with each getting the chance to run a pop-up restaurant on opposing sides of a Manchester street in a test of management and time-keeping.
Rupert and Marita, who set up ‘Bubble&’ four years ago, were a hit as Atul Kochhar delighted the couple by offering help and investment. They’ve met the Michelin star chef several times since the show was filmed in December, while an action plan for expansion is being drawn up.
“It was a great experience and we’re so pleased that we went on because we thought it was a fantastic result and collaborating with Atul has been amazing,” said Marita.
“He’s a lovely guy and it’s been great working with him.”
‘Bubble&’ are regulars at food festivals and similar events around Portsmouth, London and the South East and did a roaring trade at last weekend’s seafood festival in Gunwharf Quays.
They were tipped off about the show by a Twitter follower and festival organiser and had to submit a video film and business plan before taking part in an interview with producers.
Marita added: “We’ve had a great reaction since being on the show.
“We told friends and family we were going to be on it but we weren’t allowed to tell them the result.”
“When Rupert had the lightbulb moment to set up ‘Bubble&’ it was in the guise of a restaurant to begin with so he’s always wanted to expand, so this has been fantastic for us.”
