ENGAGED couple Jason Ledwith and Claire Molder were due to wed in Buriton, but now, much to their relief, they could lose their £1,000 deposit and have to find a new wedding venue.

After East Hampshire District Council revoked the premises licence of the Manor Barn’s owner Bob Camping, Jason said that, despite the problems, it would create for him and Claire, it was the best thing that could have happened.

He said: “We like Buriton, and were due to get married in seven weeks at the barn. But after hearing about all the problems created through how the venue was being run, we were thinking ‘how much more can local residents take.’

“If we had gone ahead in the barn, we wouldn’t have enjoyed the day for worrying about noise, and any other problems. I’m glad for the residents, they have got their village back.

“We have another venue in mind, and we hope our wedding insurance will cover the lost deposit.”

Another bridegroom said the decision was “fantastic, really good news.”

But if Mr Camping appeals against the decision to revoke his premises licence, wedding receptions can continue at the Manor Barn until the appeal is decided.

The deadline for any appeal is 21 days after the council’s decision was announced.

However, the legal adviser for a group of residents says if Mr Camping does appeal and continues hosting wedding receptions at the Manor Barn, he will face stiff opposition.

Barrister Gary Grant said: “We firmly believe there are grounds to stop him.”

After the public hearing in the Rose Room of the Festival Hall, committee chairman Cllr Bob Ayer said: “I would like to thank the people of Buriton for their conduct throughout, it has been exemplary.”
