JANE Austen fans should make a pilgrimage to Chawton where the author’s birthday is being celebrated on Wednesday, December 16.

Jane Austen’s House Museum marks the occasion each year by offering free entry to visitors, and handing out refreshments including mince pies.

The day has grown in popularity over the years, with the writer’s appeal enduring, and many make the journey back every December.

As well as the opportunity to see the lovely house, where she spent the last eight years of her life, there is an exhibition entitled Emma Imagined, of the costumes from the 2009 BBC production of Emma.

This year has been the 200th anniversary of the publication of the beloved book. This weekend, the museum will be welcoming the Alresford Lacemakers who will be demonstrating their skills on Saturday (December 12).

On Sunday afternoon (December 13) there will be music for dances and marches provided by members of local group Madding Crowd (pictured left) in the Historic Kitchen.

“The middle of December can be a quiet time so it is wonderful to have the house buzzing with life and activity,” said Madeleine Smith, the museum’s events manager.

The museum is open 10.30am to 4.30pm on December 16. Visit www.jane-austens-house-museum.org.uk for more information.
