A weekend of events is being held to celebrate 35 years of a green oasis in the heart of Petersfield.

People can learn more about the history and highlights of the physic garden from 10.30am this Saturday.

Gardener’s Question Time personality Pippa Greenwood and new Petersfield mayor, Cllr Chris Paige, will open the festivities with highlights including an exhibition about the garden’s creation and special activities for families.

Volunteer gardeners will be guides with a Grand Plant Sale taking place on Sunday.

The town’s “best-kept secret” was bequeathed to Petersfield by Major John Bowen in 1988 and opened as the physic garden two years later.

It has been re-created in the style of a medieval medicinal garden and is entirely run by volunteers.
