NOT EVEN torrential rain could wash away the Christmas spirit in Petersfield this evening when the town’s Christmas lights were switched on.

Hundreds of people braved the awful weather conditions to welcome the countdown to Christmas into the town.

Carols and traditional Christmas songs were sung by a number of school and community choirs, with the Salvation Army band getting a soaking as they bravely played on.

A number of charities and community groups from around the town set up stalls, there were children’s rides and many town centre traders stayed open late to take advantage of the extra people around the town.

Shortly after 7pm David Weeks led a countdown from the stage and the lights were then switched on, bringing some brightness to a miserable evening of weather.

The event was put on by the Post, Petersfield Town Council, St Peter’s Church and Petersfield Events, with the chosen charity for this year’s event FitzRoy.

Post editor Graeme Moir said: "It was a fantastic event and was a fitting way to get the Christmas season under way in Petersfield.

"The weather was awful but the community came out in force to support this town centre event.

"I would like to thank everyone who worked together to make this event possible and we look forward to doing it all again next year."
