CHURCHER’S College students were involved in helping to build a path system under the trees alongside Sussex Road last Wednesday and Friday.
Some 20 tonnes of path gravel had been put in the Sussex Road car park, which the students shifted between 1.30pm and 3.30pm on the two days.
Churcher’s College have been involved in this project for the past five years, during which time Churcher’s had laid material down over a length of 280 yards, while this year Churcher’s students covered a further stretch of 75 yards.
Petersfield Mayor Hilary Ayer attended and performed an opening ceremony under the trees at about 3.30pm on Friday after all of the students’ hard work.
A Churcher’s College spokesman said: “We had 32 sixth form students doing the work on the Wednesday and 32 third year students doing the work on the Friday.
“There were two large sections to do, and it was great to see all the students working together as a team.”
The Friends of Petersfield Heath has been working together with Churcher’s College on the path system.
Of the work already done to build a path system, 117 yards was completed in the first two years, 2013 and 2014, when the boggy area in the grass immediately to the west of the car park was tackled.
The next three years, 2015, 2016 and 2017, were spent dealing with the tracks and desire lines under the trees running between Sussex Road and Heath Pond.
The total length of this track, from the bridge over the ditch in the east to the board walk in the west, is 310 yards.
