A CLANFIELD woman fears her street could be turned into a series of “mini estates” if a neighbouring property is replaced with five homes.
Dawn Barnard has put a large banner up on the front of her ‘forever home’ to highlight the plans for 57 Chalton Lane.
An application by Imperial Homes to replace the current property with five dwellings was rejected in September by East Hampshire District Council on the grounds of overdevelopment.
Planning officers also felt the proposals were out of keeping with the character and appearance of the area, and were unhappy with parking arrangements and the potential loss of privacy and foliage.
Some 89 objections were submitted with parish councillors fearing that approval could set a precedent for similar developments along the lane, which borders the South Downs National Park.
But an appeal was lodged in December and Mrs Barnard fears the scheme will be approved by an inspector unless villagers maintain their objections.
She said: “If this goes ahead what’s to stop all the bigger parts of Chalton Lane and Sunderton Lane from becoming mini-estates?
“I think this is about money and nothing else,” added Dawn, who revealed that she turned down an approach from a developer for her property in the past.
“The biggest problem I’ve faced is that people don’t know about it and a lot of people I’ve spoken to think it’s a foregone conclusion.”
The applicants, who insist their proposals are “well designed” and “entirely acceptable” want to build a pair of detached homes, each containing four bedrooms, on the site of the current chalet bungalow along with a terrace of cottages, each containing three bedrooms.
