A former student wants to say ‘Hola’ to her former teacher and classmates in Petersfield after playing her part in an international mystery.

Last week the Post ran an article about a postcard addressed to “Sheila” being hand-delivered from the Galapagos Islands to former mayor, Peter Clist.

But while mystery surrounds the “Hugh” that delivered the postcard, the sender has been revealed with Sheila Nockold getting in touch over the weekend.

Sheila was one of Mr Clist’s students when she took part in U3A Spanish classes in Petersfield, with one of the lessons focusing on the postal service on the islands.

So when she visited The Galapagos Islands in January, she had to send a postcard to her former teacher.

She said: “I am the Sheila who sent the postcard from the Galapagos Islands to my old U3A Spanish class.

“Although I’ve left the group, I remember translating an interesting article from Spanish to English with them about the barrel that has been used as a ‘post office’ in the Galápagos Islands for centuries.

“So when I visited there in January and went to ‘Post Office Bay’ I felt I had to send a postcard via the barrel!

“I’ve also got to say thank you to Hugh for kindly delivering it by hand, as is the custom.”

Sheila also wanted to thank Peter and the U3A (University of the Third Age) for their help and classes, with members of Mr Clist’s class sharing the sentiment.

Sheila said: “It is a fantastic organisation for retired people to engage in all manner of hobbies or learning with like-minded people.”

“I think it’s the diverse approach,” said Spanish student, Lynda Hine, adding: “I still struggle with a lot of the conversations but I’m getting there and the approach by Peter is absolutely superb.”
