The Co-op Food store at Moggs Mead, Petersfield, will close permanently on Tuesday, February 24.
Southern Co-op said the decision follows sustained market changes and rising operating costs.
Shocked customers contacted the Petersfield Post this morning after learning that the store would soon shut.
One said: “I am really surprised by this. It always seemed busy and had lots of regular customers.
“I just hope the staff can find new jobs as they were always so friendly and helpful.”
A spokesperson for Southern Co-op said the closure forms part of wider efforts to optimise the society’s store portfolio and strengthen its long-term operating model in response to external challenges and competition.
They added that the move “in no way reflects the dedication or performance of colleagues”.
Staff at the store have been informed. Southern Co-op said it will work closely with affected colleagues to explore opportunities to transfer to other stores or roles within the society where possible.
“While this may not be feasible for everyone, we are committed to supporting all impacted colleagues throughout this process,” the spokesperson added.
They also thanks the store’s customers.
“We would like to thank our customers for their loyalty and apologise for any disappointment caused as a result of the decision to close this store,” the spokesperson said.
