Residents and staff at Downs House care home in Petersfield threw open their doors this summer for a day of music, food and family fun – all in support of Dementia Friendly Petersfield.

The event, which will now become an annual fixture, was organised by the home’s activity team – Debbie Walker, Olivia McDonald and Grace Walsh – with manager Samantha Thorne. Together with residents, who spent weeks preparing for the day, they welcomed local families and children for a celebration in aid of dementia support.

There was something for everyone: face-painting, raffles, tombolas, a treasure hunt and a colouring competition kept children entertained, while stalls offered homemade cakes and ice creams. Chef Lawrence made sure there was food for everyone with a barbecue, salad table, and refreshment bar.

Music played a key part, with performances from Lynn Taylor, Alfie Shipley, Rustyn George and the South Downs Ukulele Band. Residents were at the heart of the festivities, greeting visitors and joining in the dancing.

“We had so many smiles, dancing and laughter,” said activity coordinator Debbie Walker. “Our residents were proud of what we achieved – and we’re determined to make it bigger and better next year.”

All proceeds will go to Dementia Friendly Petersfield, which provides safe, welcoming activities such as dances and a weekly choir for those living with dementia and those feeling isolated.

“Thanks to everyone who donated prizes, time and support,” the Downs House team said. “This was community spirit at its best.”
