EAST Hampshire District Council has won a High Court battle to save agricultural land at a former stately home on the East Meon to West Meon road.

On behalf of South Downs National Park Authority, planning enforcement officers and a legal team have gained an injunction to stop development on land at Westbury Park.

Land at the back of the semi-derelict house owned by property firm HT Land Reading, was recently split up and sold as ‘amenity land’ plots.

Soon afterwards large ‘expedition’ tents went up, fire pits dug and other wooden structures appeared on some plots.

On November 10 the council gained a temporary pre-emptive injunction, stopping further development, and on Friday, December 9, the injunction was made permanent.

It forbids owners developing the 47 plots off Coombe Lane without express planning permission.

District councillor Rob Mocatta said: “Local residents were worried about what might happen on this land inside the South Downs National Park, so this is very popular decision. The council is clear that enforcing our planning rules is a top priority and I am delighted the team took swift action swiftly to nip this in the bud.”
