THE FOURTH Liss Film Festival at the Triangle was a big success, say organisers.

The 2016 festival started with a grand opening night gala on Thursday, February 18, and a screening of Ricki and the Flash.

West End producer Sam Hiller was due to open the festival but he was unable to be present.

Fortunately, Sam’s parents, George and Ruth, were able to attend, and Ruth gave a moving speech about Sam’s charity work.

One of the organisers of the festival, Marilyn Timney, said: “It was disappointing that Sam couldn’t make it, but we understand why. Ruth stood in very well and it was nice that we got to hear about Sam’s charitable side.

“The opening night gala went well and the canapes went down extremely well.”

The festival’s finale was a closing gala of a two-course meal and a screening of Suffragette.

A new feature this year was the opportunity to have afternoon tea on Friday, February 19, after the screening of Cinderella, which proved to be popular.

Next year will be the fifth Liss film festival, as this popular event continues to go from strength to strength.

“This year’s festival was a big success and we had good audience numbers and positive feedback,” said Marilyn.

“People liked the films and there was a good variety to appeal across the board.

“We are very grateful to our sponsors Redmayne-Bentley Stockbrokers, Hampshire County Council, and all our other sponsors. I’d also like to mention our volunteers, who worked so hard, and a special mention for Sue Jordan’s floral work, which she does beautifully.

“We are learning every year and developing, so it would be nice to think we can improve it next year.

“It will be our fifth festival and we have got some ideas.”

Money raised from this year’s festival will go towards a new stage at the Triangle.
