Sky Park Farm, a respected working deer farm, was officially opened last week by Petersfield mayor Councillor Phil Shaw, and deputy mayor Cllr Peter Clist.
Cllr Shaw said: “Sky Park Farm is a new visitor experience on Petersfield’s doorstep that provides a unique way to explore the delights of our local countryside and the South Downs National Park. It will be a great asset to the local area.”
The opening weekend at the farm off the A272 and up a lane from Durleigh Marsh to West Harting was a sell out with just under 500 visitors, including Harting Parish Council members, who braved the wet and windy weather to experience a tour of the working deer farm.
And the beautiful weather over the bank holiday weekend, saw more than 1,000 visitors take the opportunity to enjoy the farm in glorious sunshine.
The races (walkways between paddocks) are used to move herds of red, white and sika deer around the farm.
These provide a natural farm trail giving visitors access to a dew pond and the banks of the River Rother for picnicking.
Visitors can get close to the deer and, at specific times of day, meet with the farm rangers to learn more about the deer while feeding them.
Education about the journey from field to fork and healthy eating is at the heart of Sky Park Farm’s vision.
Later in the season farm visitors will also be able to enjoy the adventure playground with its two dedicated age appropriate woodland play areas.
The working deer farm already produces high quality venison, currently available in local supermarkets.
The phased opening of the farm will see a farm shop, butchers and cafe, The Grazing Rooms, open in July.
East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds and Chichester MP Gillian Keegan also enjoyed the opening day.
Mr Hinds said: “New attractions like this are great for the local area, and I am sure visitors will not only enjoy learning more about the breeding and farming practices used to raise the deer, but also the opportunity to try venison alongside other local produce.”
Gillian added: “It was wonderful to visit Sky Park Farm, which is a truly unique day out.
“The park team has done a brilliant job bringing together sustainable tourism and farming, showcasing the best of Sussex produce.
“They’ve balanced education and fun perfectly, if you’ve never stood near a very large herd of deer, then I’d recommend you visit.
“I was delighted to attend the opening of Sky Park Farm and meet the team behind the new venture.
“It is great to see old traditions brought back to life in such an innovative way.
“But not only does the farm share knowledge about modern deer farming, it also supports local suppliers through the shop and cafe.”
