A YOUNG archaeologist who made the grade at a Petersfield school will be digging up the past for years to come.
Years of hard work have paid off for Alex Andrews as he’s off to York University to study his dream subject of archaeological science.
The 18-year-old has been involved in digs and other archaeological work since a visit to Hadrian’s Wall piqued his interest in archaeology in 2007.
He was just 13 when he took part in his first dig in Winchester, helping to unearth a Roman road and learning the techniques. Since then, he was participated in multiple digs with Newcastle University and Reading Vale of Pewsey Field School, while Alex has also attended lectures and study days in Durham and Southampton.
Alex, who has also visited well-known archaeological sites in Pompeii, Egypt and Rome, studied A-Level maths, physics and economics at Churcher’s College to ensure he has the requisite scientific and economic background.
A spokesman for the school said: “Alex has been a team player at Churcher’s, playing rugby for the school, being a saxophonist in the jazz and blues band and a member of the Sixth Form College.”
“We have no doubt he’ll be equally successful in his future dream career – congratulations.”
