AS THE spring archaeological dig begins on Petersfield Heath, public talks about the People of the Heath project are due to take place.

Project archaeologist George Anelay is heading this latest dig into Bronze Age burial mounds on the east side of the Heath on eastern edge of Petersfield.

He said: “We are looking for more data on the mound barrows, so we will be looking at another one of those.”

A flat barrow will also be explored. The excavations began yesterday (Tuesday) and end on May 14, and visitors to the digs are welcome.

Between 7pm and 8.30pm tomorrow (Thursday), Dr Stuart Needham will be giving a free talk on the four-year Heath project, overseen by Petersfield Museum.

Contact Rosalind Norrell of the museum, on 01730 260756, to book a seat for the evening in the Rose Room of the Festival Hall.

The Friends of Petersfield Heath have cleared scrub from the dig sites, and at their annual meeting chairman Richard Wharton will summarise their work of the past year, including helping with the project.

There will also be a talk on the related topic of Butser Ancient Farm at the meeting on Tuesday, May 3, from 7.30pm, also in the Rose Room. For details contact Mr Wharton on 07982 922570.
