HUNDREDS of woodland flowers have been planted at a sheltered housing complex in Petersfield.

The 800 anemone blanda plants, also wnown as Windflower, will grace the communal gardens of the Ramscote flats off Borough Road next year.

The spring treat comes thanks to East Hampshire district councillor Nicky Noble, who used a discretionary grant to buy the bulbs and planting tools.

The planting project was led by 91-year-old resident Philip Roots – pictured above with his daughter Melanie Oxley – a Ramscote resident.

The attractive woodland flowers, in blue and white, will flower between February and April, giving a carpet of colour, well before the trees get their leaves.

They have been planted under the entrance trees near residents’ back doors.

A group of 10 volunteers from Petersfield University of the Third Age’s gardening group, including Mr Roots’ daughter, arrived and planted the bulbs in just over an hour.

Mr Roots is an enthusiastic gardener, and has helped Ramscote win Petersfield in Bloom awards for the past two years, thanks to his improvements to the site.

He added: “Gardening is a perennial interest and it keeps me young.”
