This year the televised appeal and local events around the country in schools and elsewhere raised around £50m for children’s causes.
Headteacher at Herne Junior School in Petersfield Tony Markham said: “It’s not always obvious to the children why we are raising money for it because it’s almost become its own thing.
“But we always make a point of showing them snippets from children or organisations that have benefitted from the money.
“I think that because it is local to the UK, people put their hands in their pockets that much more readily because they believe the money goes where it says it goes.”
