A HAMPSHIRE Police cycle safety scheme is back on the road as cyclists take advantage of the spring weather.

‘Give cyclists plenty of space when overtaking’ – that’s the message as more cyclists return to the regions roads.

The ‘Give Space, Be Safe’ operation, more commonly referred to as the Close Pass scheme, runs until Friday (March 23).

The campaign targets drivers who fail to follow the Highway Code rules on safe passing distances when overtaking cyclists.

But it also serves to remind cyclists to be more visible and ensure they have lights on and lit after sunset with a Be Bright Be Seen awareness message.

Across Hampshire and Thames Valley 1,122 cyclists have been killed or seriously injured in the past the years.

Road Safety Sergeant Rob Heard said: “At this time of year more people are deciding to get their bikes out and start cycling.

“Many cyclists will still choose to commute to and from work, and from a safety perspective motorists need to take added care to look out for cyclists.

“A close pass not only presents danger to the cyclist but it’s also intimidating. Drivers should be allowing other road users as much room they would a car – but many seem to not know this, or choose to ignore it.

“Equally cyclists need lights on their bikes not only to avoid prosecution but to keep them safer and visible when riding after sunset."
