A SELBORNE farmer has been elected chairman of East Hampshire District Council for the coming year.

After spending the past year as deputy chairman, Councillor David Ashcroft of Oak Tree Farm in Honey Lane, duly took over the chairmanship after a vote of confidence from his fellow councillors.

The former Hampshire chairman of the National Farmers Union says for his year in office he will be proud to chair full council meetings, and honoured to represent the district both locally, and elsewhere.

He said: “I hope to provide balance at council meetings, and promote the interests of the district further afield, and do my best to see they are taken forward, as we have a lot to offer.”

He has also named the two charities he will be fundraising while in office.

One, is Southern Domestic Service, which helps families, especially children, going through troubled times, and the other is Medical Detection Dogs, a charity that trains dogs to detect cancer.

Cllr Ashcroft was re-elected to the council in May 2015 to represent Blackmoor, Kingsley, Oakhanger, Selborne and the Worldhams. Horndean district councillor and Horndean Parish Council chairman Lynn Evans was elected deputy chairman of East Hampshire District Council.
