FOLLOWING his appointment as Secretary of State for Education in the Cabinet reshuffle by the Prime Minister earlier this month, East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds has praised schools in his constituency.

He said: “We’re very fortunate to have a fantastic provision for learning here in East Hampshire, from the first rate nursery and primary schools across our villages and towns, Eggar’s and Amery Hill Schools in Alton, the newly-expanded Bohunt School in Liphook, The Petersfield School, and Mill Chase Academy in Bordon which will move to a brand new site in 2019.

“With Alton College, a range of independent schools, and the new Future Skills Centre in Bordon, there is real opportunity for our children to learn and progress. And from my contact with these schools and colleges, I know the level of dedication and passion amongst teachers, and how important education is for our children and our future.

“As some will know, I have long had an interest in both education and social mobility, particularly with my earlier roles as a member of the Education Select Committee and as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Social Mobility, and I am delighted to be appointed Education Secretary.

“There are undoubted challenges ahead, but ensuring we have a resilient and dynamic education system that enables people to realise their ambitions and full potential is a priority for this Government.

“This is particularly important as we look ahead to support our long term economic growth, as we must continue to equip people with the knowledge and skills that make the most of their talents and prospects.

“I am very excited to be taking on this important role, and look forward to working with the teaching profession, educational staff, businesses and employers to build on the work already achieved in both raising education standards and offering opportunity.”
