The Portsmouth Action Group will host the 32nd South Downs Safari at the end of this month with a second event in October.

These involve sponsored walks to raise money for water and health projects in Africa

This year it is supporting Oxfam Water and Sanitation Projects in Niger, the least developed country in the world.

The first walk takes place this Sunday, starting at 10am from the Sling, which is just inside the Stansted Estate at the Rowlands Castle end. This is a family friendly guided walk of six miles, going via Idsworth and Finchdean.

A four-mile option will also be available.

The second walk on Sunday, October 11 starts at 10am from the National Trust Car Park at Harting Down just off the B2141(grid ref. SU 791180) This seven-mile walk follows the South Downs Way and returns via Hooksway where there is a pub.

Both walks are inside the South Downs National Park.

The Harting Down walk is particularly attractive with quite stunning views, particularly to the north over South Harting, the Weald and to Black Down beyond.

Owen Plunkett, one of the organisers of these walks said: “We are delighted that we have been able to run this event for 32 consecutive years and that we have raised well over £50,000 for Oxfam water and health projects in that time”.

Walkers are encouraged to raise sponsorship or alternatively to make a donation.

Further details and sponsorship forms can be obtained from Owen Plunkett on 023 9225 4959, e-mail [email protected], or from Elizabeth Longland, the leader of both walks 023 9248 0746 or e-mail [email protected]
