STAFF and students at The Petersfield School have held their annual celebration and recognition of the day the school opened.

The first pupils started attending the school on June 20, 1958.

There were quizzes, music in the bandstand and sport activities at break and lunch and there were cakes for all to enjoy.

Dr Vivienne Fulda is a former history teacher at The Petersfield School (TPS).

She compiled and wrote the 50th anniversary history of the school back in 2008 but she left the following year.

She said: “I can’t believe it’s nine years since I left. The school looks fantastic and is as welcoming as ever.

“I really enjoyed compiling the book and I love to hear that TPS?celebrates this event each year.”

Meanwhile, one of the teachers at The Petersfield School has won a top professional prize.

Head of English Laura Allen has received a Certificate of Excellence from The Pearson Teaching Awards.

The awards are known as the Oscars of the teaching profession. One of Miss Allen’s students, Ella Prior has heaped praise on her teacher.

She said: “Miss Allen has inspired me to enjoy English.

“She is a great motivator and never gives up on a student.

“She really is the perfect teacher.”

The awards were set up to recognise and celebrate outstanding teachers and teaching on a UK-wide basis.

Run by the Teaching Awards Trust and supported by Pearson and the BBC, they are the UK’s most prestigious celebration of transformational teaching.
