KEEN gardeners at a school in Steep have enjoyed harvesting the fruits of their labour.
Children at Bedales Prep?School, Dunhurst, were involved in a charity event called the Big Soup Share.
The school, which attained a level five gardening award from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) last year, put out a call for home grown vegetables to be donated to the school as well as using their own produce from the school garden.
The pupils then spent their lessons on?cooking up a delicious broth to sell at break times.
The RHS Campaign for School Gardening initiated the Big Soup Share as part of its 10th birthday celebrations.
Ryan Walsh, head of outdoor work at Dunhurst, said: “It was a fantastic day. Our pupils loved making and tasting the soup and we sold over 100 cups for charity.
“Many pupils and parents have asked me if we can do it every Friday.”
The proceeds from the soup share will go to Crisis – the national homeless charity.
Dunhurst will play host to an RHS continuing professional development course in March next year where teachers and other professionals can learn more about establishing an ‘edible garden.’
