BEDALES Pre-prep school, Dunannie was a hive of activity when two sculptors visited the school in Steep to help celebrate National Insect Week.
In a departure from the usual timetable, children learned all about insects and put what they had learnt into creative practise, creating sculptures of insects.
Sculptors Cara Wassenberg and Madeline Allison, who both have studios in Hampshire, worked with the children for two days to create a huge copper structure which has been positioned in the playground of the school.
The design, which is made up of moving parts, includes a stag beetle, a dragonfly and a bee – the motif of Bedales schools.
The walls of the school library were also adorned with all the insect related work that had been achieved over the week, ranging from poetry to scientific and mathematical research.
Dunannie headteacher Jo Webbern said: “Not only will the sculpture be a thing of beauty that the children have played a part in creating, but it will also be a learning tool for the future.”
The bi-annual National Insect Week is overseen by the Royal Entomological Society, and runs from June 18-24, but events and competitions are organised across the country in the run-up to it. For details visit the website at: www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk
