FINGERS, energy, vehicles, bikes, plants – nearly everything is green at this year’s Buriton Village Show.

The show this Saturday (August 20) combines displays of garden produce and flowers and villagers’ arts and crafts, with stalls aimed at combating climate change in one form or another.

Show spokesman Buzz Cousins said: “Many parishioners enjoy entering the traditional horticultural show, which blends well with the environmental activities.”

Once again there are two show venues – the village hall on the recreation ground and the Manor Barn by the village pond.

Show classes such as home-grown fruit, veg and flowers will be in the barn, as well as baking, crafts, artwork, photography, a caption competition and home-made cakes and tea.

Young people’s entries will be on display in the village hall, and the Buriton Climate Care Group (BCCG) will be encouraging visitors to go green, cut their carbon footprint and help the environment.

BCCG member Doug Jones said: “While Covid has shaken us, global warming and the crises affecting nature have not gone away. Everybody can do their bit and we hope the show will provide ideas, advice and inspiration.”

Also in the hall, Buriton Pollinators Group will show how to encourage minibeasts into gardens and how to support pollinators.

There will also be a Paint a Pollinator session at 2.45pm, and at 3.15pm chef Heinrich Boreniok will create healthy dishes.

Buriton School pupils’ climate artwork will be on show, along with solar panels and home insulation and energy efficient heating systems.

There will be details of local homes already reducing their carbon footprint, and visitors can assess their own carbon footprint online.

And villagers will be able to book a thermal survey to help identify where their home is losing heat, and electric car and bike owners will be demonstrating the benefits of fuel- free transport.

Other stallholders include Hampshire Swifts Group, the county council’s pollinator team, Petersfield and District Beekeepers, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Hampshire and IoW Wildlife Trust, and Buriton’s St Mary’s Eco Church Group.

Petersfield Cycle Buddies, Southern Water and Abri Housing Association will also be offering help and advice.

And bug specialist Melanie Oxley will lead a recreation ground Minibeast Safari at 2.15pm.

Buzz added: “Buriton climate and pollinator campaigners are a dynamic focus of energy, and have assembled an amazingly-varied spectacle to enjoy and learn from.”

Both venues open at 1.30pm and the prize giving is at 4pm.
