Two Tchaikovsky works will soon be echoing round Petersfield Festival Hall.
Petersfield Orchestra, led by conductor Robin Browning (pictured right with orchestra leader Helen Purchase), start their autumn concerts on Thursday, November 17, with the Romeo and Juliet overture.
In this work Tchaikovsky fashioned a gripping musical sequence from the tale of Shakespeare’s tragic lovers.
The piece is full of glorious tunes portraying the elemental passion that led hero and heroine to their doom.
The second half of the concert features Tchaikovsky’s often flamboyant, sometimes tender, and always rhythmic and tuneful epic Fourth Symphony.
It culminates in a whirlwind finale, giving the orchestra a frenetic virtuoso workout.
Between the masterpieces is the Trumpet Concerto by Alexander Arutiunian. Sometimes jazzy, sometimes folk-like, it is a favourite of trumpet star Lucy Humphris.
Lucy, from Grayshott, has a devoted local following and a growing international reputation.
She played this piece as a Churcher’s College pupil and is a returning soloist with the orchestra.
The concert starts at 7.30pm, with a free pre-concert event at 6.30pm. Tickets are £18, £16, and £5 for under 19s, from October 17 at One Tree Books in Lavant Street (01730 261199) or online via www.petersfieldorchestra.org.uk
