ENVIRONMENTAL activists in Petersfield are calling for residents to support a day of action on Sunday (August 31).
Extinction Rebellion Petersfield is part of an international movement campaigning for urgent action to tackle climate change and climate poverty.
Sunday’s action in The Square will begin at 11am, where local activists will speak to visitors and residents about the simple changes they say can make to improve life for us all.
XR spokesman Melanie Oxley said: “We hope all will want to engage in making pledges and responding to a new local questionnaire.
“There will also be a fascinating talk at 11.30am from Paul Turner, Climate Change teacher, who will set out the facts and figures of climate change and how this is likely to affect our lives in the very near future.
“We understand, along with many climate scientists, that we are already suffering extreme weather effects caused by global warming and we call for urgent action to keep to the Paris Agreement target of 1.5C.
“Our current trajectory is heading for 4C of warming, which will result in catastrophic climate events leaving our own species struggling to survive.
“Under the banner We Want to Live, can we not together avoid the extinction of hundreds of species, as well as ourselves?
“We cannot let our future slip away. There is work to do. Please come along, hear what is being said, and join us.”
