THE ENVIRONMENT Secretary has praised Herne Junior School for its commitment to the environment.
Minster Liz Truss said the Woodland Trust Green Trees School Award was “great” for encouraging children to care for the environment, and that schools like Herne did a fantastic job.
She said: “I have been planting trees in inner city schools in London, and it’s good to see schools like yours being enthusiastic about planting trees.”
Headteacher Tony Markham told the minister that it was not the only environmental scheme at the school.
He said: “We are lucky to have amazing grounds at Herne, and the award was given to schools which care about trees.
“In terms of instilling a love of the environment and good habits in terms of respecting the environment, it has to start in the children’s day-to-day setting.
“We have an allotment club, there are nature detectives, and there is a green team that tidies up school grounds in lunch hour.”
