The Farnborough Symphony Orchestra is giving its 100th Birthday Concert at the Princes Hall in Aldershot on November 12 at 7.45pm.

Almost 100 years after its first ever concert, the Farnborough Symphony Orchestra is back for another wonderful season, and in a celebratory mood.

The Orchestral Society of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, as the Farnborough Symphony Orchestra was then, gave its first concert on December 13, 1922.

One of the works performed was Schubert’s beautiful Rosamunde Overture, which fittingly will open the 100th birthday concert as well.

The orchestra is honoured to be joined by flautist Christian Paquette to perform Reinecke’s charming and lyrical Flute Concerto, before the evening closes with Dvorak’s joyous Symphony No. 8, a rousing work that will bring the birthday celebrations to an end in style.

Many will remember Marina Piccinini playing Ibert’s Flute Concerto with the orchestra a few years ago.

Known for her unwavering support of grassroots music-making, she was in the UK performing at London’s Southbank Centre and happily agreed to come and work with the orchestra on the same trip.

Her foundation is now supporting Christian Paquette’s performance with the orchestra. The inaugural winner of the Marina Piccinini International Concerto Competition, and newly-appointed principal flute of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, he is building a reputation as a soloist across North America and beyond.

Artistic director William Carslake will take the baton for this glorious evening, as the orchestra reflects on all that has changed in its century of playing for the people of Hampshire and Surrey.

It is looking forward to another 100 years of performing classical and contemporary music, and encouraging the next generation of players, composers and audience members.

Tickets cost £13.50 for adults and £6.75 for children and students in full-time education, and are available from the Princes Hall box office on 01252 329155 or online at www.farnboroughsymphony.org.uk/concerts

The Farnborough Symphony Orchestra serves the local community in north-east Hampshire and west Surrey and is supported by Paris Smith, Dar Plus and Making Music.

It performs a varied programme of orchestral music to a high standard and provides its members with the opportunity to play a symphonic repertoire under a professional conductor.
