A FAMILY fun afternoon for Syrian refugees put on by a Petersfield charity which helps rehome Syrian families and lone Syrian children has been hailed a success.

It was organised by members of the Rural Refugee Network (RRN) – which rehomes refugees in East Hampshire and Hampshire, and whose founder members live in Langrish and Buriton.

The event at Winchester University was aimed at providing the chance for refugee families living in rural locations to meet with other refugees, and of the 50 people in attendance, about 30 were children.

But as well as socialising, enjoying food made by RRN volunteers or provided by the university, and taking part in games, careers guidance was also on offer.

RRN spokeswoman Emily Mott said: “It was a lovely day for everyone involved, and we all had a fantastic day coming together and helping to make it a truly happy event.

“It was a chance to celebrate the success of resettlement and also to offer employment networking for the refugees.”

University spokesman Sarah-Louise Collins said: “We look forward to being able to work more closely with RRN in developing events that enable refugees and asylum seekers to thrive.”
