FILM fans will be reminded of the comic genius of a much-missed Hollywood actor when a mid-1990s classic is shown by Sheet Film Club next Thursday.

The Birdcage, an American comedy film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane and Dianne West, will be shown in the village hall from 7.30pm.

The film is a laugh-a-minute remake of the earlier French classic La Cage aux Folles with Williams playing the gay owner of a Florida drag nightclub.

He learns that his straight son (Dan Futterman) is coming home and is engaged to be married but his fiancée’s father (Hackman) is an ultra-conservative senator who will not be comfortable meeting his gay father or his even more flamboyant lover (Nathan Lane).

Full of sparkling dialogue and sharp performances, this film guarantees a happy start to 2019. Entry £6 on the door.
