A Florida man who brought sunshine and an “American” touch to the mayoral role has announced his surprise resignation from Petersfield Town Council.

A gulf needs to be filled on PTC as JC Crissey took part in his last full town council meeting on Thursday, May 1, blaming new work commitments for his decision.

But the former mayor – probably the most photographed in Petersfield’s history thanks a very proactive 18-month spell in the hotseat – hasn’t ruled out a return sometime in the future, citing his love for the council and the town.

He said: “Never say never, as I loved being here at the town council and I loved being mayor.

“I’ve always been critical of other councillors who got elected and didn’t put the time into serving the community so I didn’t want to be hypocritical.

“When I started the new job in February I told the town mayor (Lesley Farrow) these concerns.

“She asked me to stay but I’ve decided to call it a day – there were some very shocked faces when I told everyone at the council meeting.”

An election has been called to fill his Ramshill seat on the council, with JC reminding the Post he didn’t actually come first in the election that got him a place on PTC.

“I was a full-time mayor and I loved it,” said JC, with handing control of PTC to Herne Junior School pupils being one of the most memorable experiences.

“I will miss it. But I’m not leaving Petersfield, my house is still in Herne Farm and I’m still here today.

“I love the town council and I think it’s an important organisation. I hope one day, when I can give the some kind of energy to the post, to be able to run again.”
