A?FREE?open day where visitors can see hand-crafted bespoke wooden furniture is taking place in Froxfield on Saturday.

The Edward Barnsley Workshop is opening its doors again this year for the open day, from 10am to 4pm.

Visitors will be able to see their finest creations and purchase some of their smaller items, such as chess boards, bread boards, mirrors, jewellery boxes and display cases.

Designer-manager of the Edward Barnsley Workshop James Ryan said:?“Our last open day attracted around 200 visitors and we hope this one will be another great success.

“Tea and coffee will also be available and visitors will also have the chance to see our apprentices at work and walk around the workshop and garden, which is currently being restored back to its former glory.”

The workshop’s history dates back to the Arts and Crafts movement and is located in Froxfield which overlooks the South Downs.

The company makes bespoke furniture which embodies the values of the movement.

Today there are three apprentices. Ian Towers and Warren Bentley, who are in their first year and Nathan Peach, currently in his second year.

They will all be exhibiting their work at the open day. Furniture commissions which the team are working on will be on display, including a lectern for Brighton College for its chapel and a fire surround for a local client.

Edward Barnsley was one of the most important British furniture makers of the 20th century, and he established his workshop in 1923.
