A NIGHT of light entertainment in Rowlands Castle will be saved if villagers spare a few pennies for the guys in charge.

A fundraising campaign has been launched as the Rowlands Castle Association (RCA) and its colleagues face a race against time to raise £15,000 for a second gate at the recreation ground.

Health and safety experts will not allow the fireworks display to continue in its current form if a second gate for emergency access is not installed in time for the November 2 event.

Rowlands Castle Parish Council and RCA are sharing the costs while developer contributions and a handout from Councillor Malcolm Johnston’s Community Fund should swell the coffers further, but a shortfall is expected.

“The RCA has been running the annual fireworks display for 40 years and this display has brought joy to generations of young people and adults in our village,” said Helen Penfold, RCA chairperson.

“Apart from bringing much enjoyment to the village, the fireworks event has raised sufficient funds to help local schools, nurseries, guides, scouts, three churches, village clubs, the parish hall, equipment for the surgery and many other local worthy causes.

“With two exits we will be allowed to accommodate 2,500 spectators, and this is a sufficient number to be about to provide an enjoyable and safe firework display.”

Helen added: “It is our expectation that provided the money is forthcoming we will be able to create the exit in time for this November’s fireworks.”

Cash and cheques, made payable to the RCA, can be donated at Londis Castle Stores and Homehardware or through BACS on www.rowlandscastle.com
