A HALF hour talk turned into a one hour tour-de-force as Google UK director Craig Fenton talked passionately and convincingly on a recent visit to Ditcham Park School about Google’s mission to make the latest technology available to everyone.
Arriving in his state of the art Model X Tesla electric car which auto drove itself to Ditcham, he addressed a packed audience of parents who had come to hear the Breakfast Lecture on the subject of Artificial Intelligence and Virtual and Augmented Reality.
He demonstrated the artificial intelligence built in to Google’s new smart phone and brought along some goggles to demonstrate the wonders of the world of virtual reality.
After a brief break, Craig Fenton spent an hour talking to two groups of pupils in classrooms before addressing a juniors assembly and then a seniors assembly.
Ditcham Park School spokesman Lisa Tosdevine said: “The students were fascinated and asked some difficult questions, such as did Craig agree with Professor Stephen Hawking who fears artificial intelligence will threaten the human race in a Terminator style scenario.
“Reassuringly, and perhaps not surprisingly, Craig did not agree with Professor Hawking’s predictions.”
The school also announced it is holding a Year three open morning at which visitors will be able to meet the staff and see pupils testing moving vehicles using their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) knowledge.
The open morning on Tuesday, March 6, from 10.30am to noon, is open to all parents interested in learning more about the school and its extensive playing fields and grounds.
Refreshments will also be on offer, and for more information, or to arrange a personal visit, contact the schools head of admissions Mandy Lowe on 01730 825659, or email [email protected]
