HAMPSHIRE County Council is hosting a flag raising ceremony on Commonwealth Day as part of a nationwide celebration.
During the ceremony in Winchester Great Hall, the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Nigel Atkinson will read the Commonwealth Affirmation, before the flag is raised by council chairman, councillor Keith Chapman MBE, and Winchester mayor, councillor Jane Rutter.
Across the British Isles more than 950 flags will be raised by local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities to mark Commonwealth Day, Monday, March 13.
As a collective public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, the flag-raising enables participants to show appreciation for the values the Commonwealth upholds, and the opportunities offered for friendship and cooperation with fellow Commonwealth young and old citizens around the world.
