He may be Whitehill & Bordon’s town crier, but Stu Morrison has something of his own to shout about: his own show at The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre.
The ‘local legend’ with the magnificent moustache and technicolour suits won’t be short of material when he leads An Audience with Stu Morrison at the Station Road venue this Saturday (November 1).
Nor he will be lacking experience, as the compere is no stranger to standing under the spotlight at comedy clubs.
He said: “I’ve had many and varied careers, from engineer and designer to private investigator, toilet cleaner to car clamper.
“But I also set up my own comedy night in Guildford and that was where this performance and this side of it comes from. People might know me as the town crier but they don’t know the back story.”
Expect to hear more of this back story, coupled with a few wardrobe changes, this weekend in a show orchestrated by Phoenix supremo and host, Rob Allerston.
The intimate venue is an ideal place to learn more about the voice of W&B in a show which will include tales, slides, a quiz and maybe a singalong.
He said: “I thought it was an ego trip having a whole evening devoted to me but I’m a massive fun of the whole ‘audience with’ format and those raconteurs who can stand there and rattle off stories – I fancied myself as one of those because I’ve got so much to tell.
“To be honest, I think everyone should have a go at it because I think anyone could go onto stage and hold their own for five minutes.”
Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start while tickets are priced £14 (£13 concessions) plus booking free from 01420 472664 or www.phoenixarts.co.uk
